About Us

How Portland Vets began

George and Jenny Christopherson opened Portland Road Vet Surgery in May 2004, after falling in love with a beautiful 1890s house in Portland Road and converting it into a modern, well-equipped veterinary practice. They came to East Grinstead with a clear vision: a high-standard, friendly, caring practice for the four-legged (and smaller) members of the family. Investment in our facilities, equipment and team has been a priority ever since, and we are proud of the standard of care we are now able to offer our clients and, most importantly, their pets. The practice is still small enough to see the vet of your choice, and we actively encourage this for continuity of care.

Growing across the area

Over the years, the same Portland Vets ethos has grown well beyond East Grinstead. We opened Edenbridge in 2014, Horley in 2018, and our largest site, Crawley, in 2025. Each practice has its own dedicated team leaders, and our recruitment and training programmes make sure the same exceptional standards are there whichever practice you and your pet visit.

Our people and our care

Many of our vets hold, or are studying for, advanced qualifications in particular areas, but more importantly they have been chosen for their dedication, empathy and kindness. We have lost count of the times our clients have joked that they would happily book themselves in for their own procedures! Our nurses are integral to the care of our patients, and the standards they set for the whole practice are exacting, in patient care, communication and hygiene above all. They take real pride in their work and love providing the extra care that means so much.

A family-owned business

Portland Vets remains a genuinely family-owned, local and friendly business, and that is exactly how George and Jenny want to keep it. Their commitment to veterinary care reaches beyond small animals, too. In 2007 they founded Lingfield Equine Vets in Felbridge, which has since grown to a team of 9-10 vets and become an Employee Owned Trust. Following a major expansion in 2021, it is now an equine veterinary hospital, one of the first in Surrey.

In 2018 they also established Green Counties Vets, a dedicated farm practice for cattle, on the same site. Through it all, Portland Vets has remained their small animal home. After living above the East Grinstead practice in the early years, George and Jenny moved to a house just a few minutes away, and have raised their two daughters, Ella and Sienna, alongside the practice. The eldest is now at university studying medicine, and the youngest is in her final years at school.

In recent years Jenny has stepped back from the practice to instead focusing on being a taxi and following her talented girls playing sport all over the UK. She has been actively involved with local swimming and netball clubs giving a lot of her time to grassroots local teams. George is a trustee of East Grinstead Sports Club, bringing his business experience to the site and helping introduce Padel and other improvements, combining the family’s love of sport with a desire to give back to the local community.
