A consultation is dedicated time with one of our vets to examine your pet, discuss any concerns and agree on the next steps. The fee covers the vet’s time, a full physical examination, professional advice and clinical notes on your pet’s record. Any further care, such as medication, tests or procedures, is charged separately. We will always discuss these costs with you first.
Yes. The fee reflects the vet’s time, training and clinical judgement, not simply the number of minutes spent in the room. A short appointment can be good news, and the same expertise goes into examining your pet and reaching a conclusion whether the consultation takes five minutes or fifteen.
Each pet usually needs their own consultation, so the vet has enough time to examine them properly and record their care separately. If you would like more than one pet to be seen, please book an appointment for each pet. You are welcome to bring another pet along for support, too. We particularly encourage this for bonded pets, such as rabbits.
We understand that things can happen. If you need to cancel, please give us as much notice as possible so we can offer the appointment to another pet. If you are running late, please let us know your estimated arrival time. We will do our best to see your pet but can usually hold an appointment for only a few minutes. If we cannot fit you in, we will need to rebook you. A missed appointment fee may apply, particularly if appointments are repeatedly missed without notice. The current fee is listed on our price list.
Yes. Before any treatment, procedure or investigation, we will provide a written estimate so you know what to expect and can make an informed decision. For planned work, you will receive the estimate in advance. In an emergency, we will provide the clearest estimate we can as quickly as possible and keep you updated if anything changes.
A quote is a fixed price for a defined piece of work. An estimate is our best judgement of what treatment is likely to cost, based on the information available at the time. We provide estimates rather than quotes because every pet is different. Until we have examined your pet, and sometimes carried out tests or examined them under anaesthetic, we may not know exactly what they will need.
An estimate needs to cover the reasonable possibilities so you are prepared and can give informed consent for the treatment your pet may need. For example, with a dental scale and polish, we may not know whether extractions are needed until your pet is under general anaesthetic and dental X-rays have been taken. The estimate therefore needs to allow for both a straightforward clean and the possibility of extractions.
Sometimes a vet discovers something unexpected during treatment, or your pet needs more care than first anticipated. Where it is safe to do so, we will pause and speak to you before proceeding, explain what has changed and agree the next steps together. We will not carry out additional chargeable work without your agreement, unless immediate action is needed to relieve suffering.
No two practices are exactly alike. Prices reflect factors such as location, on-site equipment and facilities, the services offered, the team’s training and the day-to-day cost of running a practice safely and to a high standard. We set our prices based on the cost of providing care, rather than a target set by a corporate head office.
Veterinary care has advanced, and pets can now be treated for conditions that once had few or no treatment options. This progress relies on modern equipment, advanced medicines and skilled teams. The costs of these, alongside wider increases affecting businesses, have risen. We review our pricing carefully, so it remains fair while allowing us to continue providing the standard of care your pet deserves.
We generally review our prices [annually/biannually] to keep them in line with our costs. When prices change, we aim to give clients 28 days’ notice and will honour previous estimates during that period. The current price list on our website is the most accurate source for current prices.
Yes. After payment, you will receive an itemised invoice, either as a printout or by email. If you would like to see an itemised invoice before paying, just ask, we do not routinely print these in advance for sustainability reasons. If you have not received an invoice or need another copy later, please let a member of the team know and we will be happy to help.
Payment is due at your appointment or when you collect your pet, unless we have agreed another arrangement in advance. Pet passports and Animal Health Certificates for travel or export must be paid for in advance. We accept cash, major bank cards (including American Express), BACS transfers and contactless payments.

When we prescribe medication, a vet must assess your pet, reach a diagnosis and take clinical responsibility for the prescription. Many medicines can only be supplied under that professional oversight. If you would like a written prescription so you can buy the medicine elsewhere, a fee applies to reflect the vet’s time and responsibility. The current fee is listed on our price list.
Yes. You can request a written prescription so you can buy your pet’s medication elsewhere. To prescribe safely, your pet usually needs to have been examined recently enough for the vet to be confident in the prescription. Ongoing medication may also require check-ups at set intervals. A fee applies for a written prescription; the current fee is listed on our price list.
Portland Vets is independent and family owned. This means decisions about your pet’s care and our pricing are made here by the people who look after your pet, rather than by an external head office. About us
